HORROR SUBGENREs
There are lots of different horror films, the vast amount of components and subject matters that make up these movies are too diverse to be grouped under only one classification. This is what a sub-genre is. It's about taking movies that all fit under the horror movie genre and grouping them together with other similar movies in order to help them find a more direct audience. Here are some examples of the subgenres of horror.
Splatter / gore filmS
These films tend to focus on excessive gore and violence, they draw viewers primarily on shock factor and create fear via the idea of the human body's vulnerability and the theatricality of its mutilation.
PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR
These film's plots tend to focus on the character's own fears and insecurities, with the intention to stir up fear in an audience with the relatability of the character and their concerns.
SLASHER FILMS
Also known as 'Killer Films', these films focus on a murderer, or those being murdered. The killer tends to be psychopathic and violent, building tension as characters are picked off one by one, usually ending in a final conflict between the killer(s) and the main protagonist. The victims of this movies are usually women, and they find audiences by either feeding off the dark human nature to enjoy watching the suffering of strangers, or by creating fear through the viewer's empathy with the characters.
monster movies
These films revolve around some sort of creature of mythological beast going on a murderous rampage. Very similar to Slasher Films in some cases, just replace the killer with Godzilla and the screaming teen girls with Tokyo. An audience is drawn from the desire to see large scale destruction or brutal murder; in modern day these films rely very heavily on their use of special effects.
SUPERNATURAL horror
Simply put, these are films which focus on supernatural occurances, like ghosts or the occult. They generate fear in an audience through the suggestion of being trapped in a situation in which someone is at the mercy of something that acts outside of the laws of nature, with little to no hope of understanding or defeating it. Fear is spawned from the viewer's own insecurities, e.g. Nyctophobia.
HORROR COMEDY
Comedy horrors are essentially comedies with cinematic and scripting elements of horrors. They can fall into any of the other categories themselves, e.g. comedy monster movie, comedy slasher film, etc.
MY DECISION
After thinking over the subgenres I would like to attempt, I have decided to create a comedy horror, this way I can connect to not only fans of horror, but fans of more fun and relaxed movies. My horror will also incorporate monster movie (Zombies) and slasher film aspects in it's plot and production.
Comedy horror is of course not the only sub-genre to blend into others, and there are even more precise classifications that fall under the listed sub genres too. Here is a more detailed graph illustrating how diverse the horror genre can really be.
